Tell that to our parents. I fear we (21st century) parents are repeating the same mistakes our parents did to conform to gender identities.
Sometimes, I hear my mum advice my brothers, “when you want to marry, choose a woman who is humble, who is submissive, who will hold your family together.” Yet she doesn’t tell my groom my brothers to be submissive and loyal husbands.
I get really pissed when I hear her advice my daughter on be a woman who bears the burden of her family.
It will be difficult to erase the damage gender identity has done to us, but we can learn to recognise them by being aware of who we want to be rather than who the society thinks we should be.
