I once fell into this trap. Mine wasn't a creative common image per se. I used a food blogger's image on my site and I references the author's name and linked it back to her site.
The blogger's attorney contacted me and requested that I pay for copyright infringement. I apologized and took down the entire post. But they insisted that I must pay.
They threatened to take me to court. I ignored them and shut down the site. I wasn't making a cent from the site to begin with. So paying a fine of any magnitude did not appeal to me.
I was lucky I got away but I never want to make such a mistake again.
