Beautifully written. A lot of ancient cultural practices should be abolish starting with dowry payment. In Nigeria, is the women that are being bought. And most of them especially the illerate ones are maltreated as well.

What saddens me about the Indian culture is that most of their women don’t make an effort to break these changes of abuse. They rather go along with whatever their family decides of their future.

Nigerian women at least put up a fight. I’m not saying we don’t have victims of abuses in marriage, the rate is lower compared to India. Also the woman’s family don’t abandon theirs when they come calling for help.

I’ve lived in America for over 20-years now and I most say their culture has shaped my life. I’ve embraced my feminism compared to when I lived in Nigeria.

I strongly hope more women can learn to be courageous and stand up for themselves. The Women’s Liberation Movement has paced way for women to be heard. Let’s not die in silence and choose to do and believe in what’s right for our happiness. Marriage is certainly not a guarantee to a happy life.
